The oldest folding table design may predate any historical records. But folding furniture referred to as “Campaign Furniture” dates back several centuries. These include folding desks, tables, chairs and chests. Campaign furniture was made for travel and mainly used by the military. Almost all were made in finished wood, and many were custom designs.
The personal use of folding tables popularized in Europe and the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries. The use of metal and plastic made the folding table and “card table” a common household item. Wood version of folding tables became less common. Mass production of plastic and metal version make for competitive prices. However, finished wood folding table have the more attractive appeal of furniture,
In 2003 Spiderlegs Tables patented a new design that resembles some Campaign tables in that the top fold in half to form a case. Spiderlegs Tables has chosen to produced these in finished wood like the Campaign furniture. The difference is that not only does the top fold, but the design includes a base that folds and legs that fold in half. The patent includes the fact that the top, the base, and the legs all fold together. And there is 
no assembly or disassembly required,
Also included in the patented design is the unique locking hinge that prevents the table from accidentally folding or collapsing. The table has the advantage of being very easy and very quick to set up. Yet the fact that the table folds more compact for storage and transport is another advantage.
